Hitting the groung running in 2024

Bothar 2024

Bothar is prepared for a busy year ahead, with significant projects secured and a growing order book.

Following the successful restructure of the Bothar Group and the retention of its highly skilled and resilient teams, Bothar has finished 2023 strong and is ready to reach great heights in 2024.

Bothar Australia general manager David King said that the successful completion and ongoing award of major projects is a testament to Bothar’s skilled workforce.

“We acknowledge and thank our clients for continuing to trust the Bothar name to deliver their projects,” King said.

“Their ongoing collaboration, combined with our expert knowledge and committed personnel has really set us up for success in 2024.

“Our people have always been our biggest asset so being able to retain them throughout the restructure was paramount to me.”

Bothar 2024
The end of 2023 saw the Bothar team complete several complex infrastructure projects.

The end of 2023 saw the Bothar team complete several complex infrastructure projects, reaffirming its top contractor status in the trenchless arena, when it comes to varied and difficult ground conditions.

In December 2023, the company’s AVN crews completed its fifth and final drive on the Elster Creek Sewer Project.

Over at the Melbourne Airport Rail, the team deployed one laser guided vacuum unit equipped with a bespoke ‘Bothar Built’ cutting head to complete 110m of DN300 in extremely hard rock (up to 280MPa varied).

Bothar’s auger boring crews wrapped up on the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds duplication project in Victoria for the Djilang Alliance.

The Bothar team worked around the clock to complete three challenging rail crossings inside just one week and well ahead of schedule. The crews were praised highly for demonstrating their safety culture and professionalism while working on-site in a time critical environment.

Bothar have had a great start to 2024, as the company has mobilised to commence work on various projects across the nation.

In Queensland, the company will be able to showcase several of its methodologies as it embarks on its trenchless scope for the Fitzroy to Gladstone Pipeline. This requires a combination of shaft design, shaft construction, and AVN1200 microtunnelling.

Bothar has also been awarded a package of works for the Aura and Harmony Infrastructure Program on the Sunshine Coast, delivered by McConnell Dowell on behalf of Unitywater.

The Queensland program consists of multiple crossings with the addition of shaft construction and temporary design components.

In Victoria, Bothar will start works at Albert Park, with over 1km microtunnelling using its Herrenknecht AVN capability.

In New South Wales, the company will flex its technical expertise by using one of 13 Bothar Built EPB machines to undertake a major crossing for ongoing utility upgrades around Sydney.

Bothar 2024
With the anticipated award of additional works, Bothar is quickly returning to lead the trenchless infrastructure sector.

With many safe and successful projects, and the anticipated award of additional works, Bothar is quickly returning to lead the trenchless infrastructure sector.

Bothar boasts a diverse portfolio of specialist subsurface engineering equipment that is available to suit each unique project and the company is primed for growth.

The company offers a full suite of trenchless solutions as well as shaft construction and civil capabilities, making them the perfect partner in the delivery of complex infrastructure projects.

Bothar’s cutting head innovation

The trenchless industry in Australia continues to grow and the need to provide customised solutions becomes vital for a leading subsurface contractor.

Recognising the need for advanced solutions to meet the growing demands of modern infrastructure projects, Bothar Boring has led the way in the innovation department with its vast fleet of in-house designed and fabricated ‘Bothar Built’ equipment.

Now, the company is breaking new ground with its latest specialist-built cutting head.

Bothar has an exceptional team of industry leading experts and equipment manufacturing specialists that turn ideas and concepts into cutting-edge solutions to overcome limitations of conventional methods.

The bidirectional retractable cutting head used to install the 500mm enveloper with absolute precision

In recent times, Bothar has experienced an increase in requests for installations where there is an inability to provide a retrieval shaft.

Bothar refers to this practice as ‘blind boring’ and it had been an obstacle on the company’s radar for some time.

When the company was approached for advice on providing a suitable method to install 19 x 102m canopy tubes under a live railway without the ability to use a retrieval shaft, the team was confident they could deliver.

There are limited trenchless methods which could deliver accuracy over such lengths.

As such, Bothar embarked on a mission to develop an innovative solution to directly install the required 500mm steel case, in rock up to 60Mpa without an exit shaft, with pinpoint accuracy, while ensuring the ground was always supported.

The result was a custom designed specialised bi-directional retractable cutting head which hadn’t been utilised on this size of installation.

Using Bothar’s in-house design and fabrication facilities, the cutting head was designed, built, and tested within a matter of weeks.

The experimental cutting head was deployed to site and proved to be extremely effective.

The tight program constraints meant that Bothar had to install two canopy tubes at a time, adding additional complexity to the delivery.

Bothar successfully completed the canopy tube installation and was able to accelerate the pace of the project with its bespoke cutting head.

The cutting head on its way to a project in Melbourne

The unique cutting head consists of three 13 ¾-inch and three 9-inch tri-cone type TCI cutters on a 50mm backing plate with water portability and outer cutters spring loaded on a 40mm greaseable solid bar hinge.

A laser guided vacuum system was used to achieve tight design tolerances at significant lengths.

The modified head was developed to ensure the tunnel is always supported by the installation of steel casing in the unlikely but possible case of ground movement.

The cutting head has since been used successfully on several projects in adverse, mixed ground conditions up to 200Mpa.

Furthermore, tackling other obstacles such as ‘blind boring’ into service manholes is now no problem with the use of this cutting head, changing the landscape of underground construction.

Bothar’s ability to utilise its vast trenchless experience to innovate such a design is backed by its inhouse workshop facility.

This gives Bothar Boring an additional advantage in the ever-evolving trenchless arena for future works.
